In Conversation With Adv. Harshita Gupta on Growing A Litigation Practice, Heading A Law Firm Branch in a Tier-II city & More

Harshita Gupta completed her Graduation in BA.LLB (Hons.) from Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur and Post-Graduation in CS from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. She is also a Licentiate Member of ICSI while being enrolled with the Bar. She started her career with Shekhar Srivastava and Associates where she worked for more than a year. Thereafter, she joined Abhinav Kardekar & Partners and after completing her 17 months tenure there, she joined Pransh Law. In association with Pransh Law, she has opened a new branch office in Bhilai and is currently heading the same.

1. Harshita, can you provide us with an overview of your legal background and journey, leading up to you heading Pransh Law Offices, Bhilai?

Harshita: My legal journey began with a strong foundation. I graduated with honors from Hidayatullah National Law University, where I majored in both Corporate and Criminal Law.  To further diversify my expertise, I pursued a post-graduation from ICSI and became a Licentiate Company Secretary.

During my law school years, I actively sought practical experience through internships at various litigation chambers. This allowed me to gain valuable hands-on exposure in litigation, corporate law, and legal research.

Following graduation, I began my legal career by working with Shekhar Srivastava and Associates. This experience provided a solid platform to build my legal skills. I then transitioned to Abhinav Kardekar & Partners, where I honed my expertise for a year and three months.

Throughout these experiences, I developed a well-rounded understanding of the legal landscape.  This strong foundation ultimately led me to take on the leadership role at Pransh Law Offices in Bhilai. In this role, I leverage my diverse legal background and leadership skills to guide the firm and serve our clients effectively.

2. What inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how has your passion for the legal profession evolved over time?

Harshita: The law has always fascinated me. It’s not just about who’s right or wrong, but a captivating mix of logic, clear communication, and established legal principles. It felt like a giant, intricate puzzle where careful solutions could ensure fairness. This early interest grew into a strong passion as I learned more. Seeing the law’s power to settle disputes, protect the weak, and even shape society itself ignited a fire in me.

However, my passion has grown beyond youthful idealism. Now, it’s fueled by the strategic back-and-forth of the courtroom, the careful breakdown of legal arguments, and the deep satisfaction of crafting solutions that are both logical and fair. It’s about using the law not just as a shield, but as a precise tool to dissect complex issues and carve a path towards a just outcome. The legal field continues to excite me with its constant evolution, demanding a sharp mind and a lifelong commitment to learning. It’s a career that not only challenges me but allows me to make a meaningful contribution to a society built on reason and justice.

3. Your involvement in civil litigation and arbitration suggests a focus on dispute resolution. Can you discuss your approach to resolving conflicts and achieving favorable outcomes for your clients?

Harshita: I believe in a multifaceted approach to dispute resolution that prioritizes achieving favorable outcomes for my clients, but not at the expense of efficiency and fairness. Here’s how I navigate conflict resolution:

  • Understanding the Landscape:  I begin by meticulously understanding the dispute’s core issues, from legal complexities to underlying interests. This involves in-depth analysis of evidence and client goals.
  • Strategic Options:  Next, I explore all available avenues for resolution. This includes litigation, arbitration, and even mediation if a win-win solution is viable.  I present my client with a clear picture of the pros and cons of each path.
  • Collaborative Strategy:  Throughout the process, I maintain open communication with my clients. We work together to develop a tailored strategy that leverages their strengths and aligns with their risk tolerance.
  • Negotiation Prowess: When negotiation is the chosen path, I leverage strong negotiation skills to advocate persuasively for my client’s position while remaining open to creative solutions.
  • Relentless Preparation: Regardless of the chosen path, meticulous preparation is paramount. This ensures we are ready for any scenario and can present the most compelling case possible.
  • Fairness Matters:  While achieving a favorable outcome is my objective, I prioritize fairness throughout the process. This fosters trust and respect, even in adversarial settings, and can sometimes pave the way for future collaboration.

By following these steps, I strive to not only secure the best results for my clients but also navigate the complexities of conflict resolution with a strategic and ethical approach.

4. In your experience, what are the key qualities that make a successful lawyer, particularly in the areas of civil litigation and corporate law?

Harshita: In my experience, the recipe for a thriving lawyer, especially in areas like civil litigation and corporate law, has a few key ingredients:

  • A Curious Mind with a Steel Trap: You gotta love untangling legal knots! It’s about having a sharp mind that can grasp complex legalese and translate it into clear strategies. Think of it as a fascinating puzzle – the more pieces you fit together, the stronger your case becomes.
  • Communication Magic:  Lawyers are storytellers, really. You gotta be able to weave a compelling narrative, both verbally and in writing. Persuasive arguments, clear explanations for clients – it’s all about wielding the power of words.
  • Persistence:  Legal battles aren’t won overnight. There will be roadblocks and challenges, but a successful lawyer never gives up. It’s about having the grit to keep pushing for the best outcome for your client.
  • Empathetic Advocate:  Clients aren’t just cases, they’re people with real concerns. Understanding their needs and goals is key. You need to be a fierce advocate in the courtroom, but also empathetic enough to build trust and navigate sensitive situations.
  • Lifelong Learner: The legal world is constantly evolving, so staying on top of your game is crucial.  I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning – new laws, legal precedents, it’s all part of keeping my skills sharp.

On top of that:

  • Civil Litigation: Here, strategic thinking is like having a chessboard in your head. Anticipating your opponent’s moves, building a watertight case, and thinking on your feet in the courtroom – that’s the key. Plus, composure under pressure? Absolutely essential.
  • Corporate Law: Business savvy is a must-have. Understanding the financial implications of legal decisions and the realities of the corporate world allows you to give clients sound advice.  And let’s not forget teamwork – collaborating with other professionals is what gets deals done.

By focusing on these qualities, I believe you can build a successful career in either civil litigation or corporate law.  And for me, it’s not just a job, it’s a passion – a chance to use my skills to solve problems and make a real difference.

5. Your bio indicates engagement in pro bono work and social causes. How do you balance your professional responsibilities with giving back to the community, and why is this important to you?

Harshita: Work-life balance is important, but for me, it extends to community involvement. I prioritize pro bono work because giving back is a core value.  I carve out dedicated time for pro bono cases, often during evenings or weekends. It allows me to stay sharp with different legal areas while using my skills to help those who might not otherwise have access to legal representation. It’s a win-win that keeps me motivated and grounded.

7. How do you stay updated with the latest developments and trends in the legal industry, and how do you incorporate them into your practice?

Harshita: Staying ahead of the legal curve is paramount to effective representation.  I achieve this through a multi-faceted approach. I actively participate in webinars, focusing on both core practice areas and emerging trends. Additionally, I subscribe to legal publications and online resources, ensuring a steady stream of updates on legal news, case law, and legislative changes. Finally, I leverage professional networks and online communities to connect with colleagues and share knowledge about the evolving legal landscape.  This allows me to not only stay informed, but also incorporate these developments into my practice for the benefit of my clients. By discussing potential implications of recent legal trends during consultations, we can collaboratively craft strategies that leverage the latest advancements in the field.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring lawyers or law students looking to pursue a career in civil litigation or corporate law?

Harshita: For aspiring lawyers or law students eyeing civil litigation or corporate law, my advice is threefold:

  • Cultivate a Well-Rounded Skill Set: Both areas demand a strong foundation in legal research, writing, and critical thinking. Hone these skills through coursework, internships, and mock trials or negotiations. Additionally, develop your communication and persuasion abilities – these are crucial for advocating effectively in court or the boardroom.
  • Find a Wise Mentor: My advice is that, choose a brilliant senior early in your career, they shape your perspective. Mentorship by a seasoned lawyer in your chosen field is invaluable.  They can provide guidance on navigating the legal landscape, developing courtroom presence (for litigation), or understanding the intricacies of corporate transactions. Witnessing their expertise firsthand will shape your own approach and equip you for success.
  • Network Like a Pro: Building strong professional relationships is key to career advancement. Attend industry events, join relevant associations, and connect with lawyers in your field. Not only will you gain valuable insights, but you might also discover potential mentors or even future employers.

Remember, the legal field rewards dedication, a thirst for knowledge, and a willingness to learn from experienced professionals. By actively building your skillset, seeking mentorship, and fostering a strong network, you’ll be well-positioned to thrive in either civil litigation or corporate law.

9. How do you manage the demands of a legal career while maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

Harshita: Balance is key! Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a priority for me. I achieve this through a combination of effective time management and clear boundaries. Every week, I create a detailed to-do list that prioritizes tasks and helps me maximize my workday. I also believe in working within defined hours and sticking to them. This allows me to focus on efficiency rather than simply putting in long hours. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is also key. This way, I can dedicate my work hours to high-impact tasks,  knowing I have dedicated time for personal well-being and recharging. This approach ensures I bring my best self to work and avoid burnout, ultimately allowing me to perform at my peak.

10. Finally, what are your long-term goals and aspirations within the legal profession, and how do you plan to achieve them?

Harshita: Pransh Law Offices has ambitious long-term goals to become a leading law firm across India. We’ll achieve this by focusing on three key areas. Firstly, the goal is to  elevate legal excellence by consistently delivering exceptional representation, attracting top talent, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and strategically expanding our practice areas.

Secondly, being present at three prominent locations in Chhattisgarh (Raipur, Bhilai & Bilaspur), we aim at building a national presence through strategic physical expansion into key cities and by forging strong partnerships with regional legal experts. This allows us to cater to a wider client base and offer national coverage with a deep understanding of local legal nuances. Finally, we’ll build a legacy of trust by prioritizing a client-centric approach at every level, ensuring clear communication, and nurturing long-term client relationships. Upholding ethical conduct and social responsibility will further solidify our position as a leading law firm.
